Hi,

yes I discovered Tally Up and downloaded it. You had a great idea developping this. I've always solved this kind of issues with a spreadsheet before and having the solution on one's iPhone is so much better.

But: to be fully complete, for each expense, you should allow to specify different 'split by' and 'paid by' amounts for each people.

For example, at the restaurant, my brother and me ate for $30, my sister ate for $20. My sister paid $24 (with 2 $12 coupons), my brother paid $46 and I paid only $10 because I had forgotten my credit card.

As of now, Tally up can't deal with it, and this is :-(

Hoping to see this arrive in the next version :-)

Cheers,

2 small gliches by the way:

- Also you shouldn't add the dollar sign on amounts. I agree this is only cosmetic, but we european users pay in euros, and we'd rather have our own € symbol, or to make it easier, just see an agnostic amount without currency at all.

- rather than forcing us to clear to default value before we can type something in Name, Cost, and other fields, you should automatically delete the default value as soon as the user type something. And just keep the default value otherwise.
The less keystrokes required, the better, isn't it?

I'll be reading these blog comment in case you answer me :-)

Hi,

Great app, well done! The new email feature is fantastic ... although the wording says "owes" when it should say "owed".

Cheers!

Thanks for the input! Fixed a few things;

- Email correctly show 'owes' and 'is owed'.
- Fields clear out when you click on them.
- The monetary formatter is now configured by your locale so you should get correct version of $ (no clue how to type the euro letter!)
- Fixed a crash that showed the delete option for the email button when you pressed edit!
- Everything is properly Localized, so if you want a translation look at the other post and I'll get a new App asap!

App store usually takes around 2 weeks to get a new version up. Thanks for your patience!

Just noticed that the auto-clear of text only works in the simulator. Odd! Will see what I can do about that.

hi brian king,

ah... been looking for an app like this which is a steal at usd 0.99! thanks. but i would like to suggest if it would be possible for you to include an additional field which would be discounts.

for an e.g., the total bill is sgd 90.00 and after 30% discount on certain food items (e.g. food excluding beverages), the amount is subjected to 17% tax (or any amount depending on different establishments) after which it shall be posted to the final tally up page.

if that could be incorporated, that would be awesome!

thanks once again!

ernest

By the way, the 2nd version, on a standard iPhone in France, still displays a "$" and not a "€".

King Brian said...

That will be in the next update. I'm working on being able to specify amounts for you and I'll submit it. Should be able to finish up tomorrow.

Also, If you could translate the next blog entry into french you could have your own french version!

Luker said...

Hey, I feel like it would really benefit the UI if you would highlight the people who are owed in green, and highlight the people who owe in red.

King Brian said...

Got the update out today, hopefully the update will come out soon. Sorry for the delay, I had some more fun with the submission process this week (should of been submitted on Thursday!)

I want to thank everyone for their input, and I would like any usability suggestions you have. Thanks for the Color suggestion Luker - that was a no-brainer!

And Ernest, I think I see what you want, but want to run it by you. If I put a blue > to the right of the cost, when you clicked it, it would bring you to a "cost customize" page which would have a calculator and a sliding bar to add a tax % or take off a discount percent.

That sound right?

Also, would syncing with other iPhones be a valued feature? That way you could have multiple people tracking the expenses!

Little bugs of the 1.2 version:

* When creating a new tally:
- Specify the tally name
- go in the "add people page"
- add people
- go back to the tally page
--> The cursor is in the tally name field and thus, the tally name has been reset.

* I've had a crash once when trying to specify a "Split by" amount (when tapping the arrow), but could not reproduce it.

King Brian said...

Yea, I already have a 1.3 that fixes issue 1. I was hoping I could sneak it in before it was approved but they were quick!

There was another bug when removing a person caused a crash. This is also fixed.

Anything you can do to reproduce the split by would be great!

King Brian said...

Hey Alexandre, how's 1.3 behaving? Did I get the French correct?

Thanks for your help.

Alex said...

Hi,

it looks better. I didn't check wether every reported bug is fixed, I think you don't need me for this.

But there are still mistakes in your french locale, you didn't take into account all my comments about it. Overall, "Déchiré par" is totally wrong and not understandable at all.
I will stop now communicating on this forum, unless serious need. Please you my email if you need me, it will be faster and easier.

cheers,

Hi Brian,

Firstly, I wanted to say thanks for a fantastic app - I just got back from holiday in Prague with eight people, and it made the nightmare of dividing up the expenses into a positive joy.

Secondly, a suggestion for an update. Would it be possible to select the currency you want to use? Mine defaults to UK pounds. It's only a superficial thing, but it would have been nice to use Czech crowns. And even more useful would be the ability to enter values in multiple currencies in one tally, so that we didn't have to convert expenses paid in GBP (e.g. taxi to airport in London). You could set the exchange rate too, relative to a home currency, so you could enter prices in a foreign currency and have the final bill presented in GBP.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and best of luck with future updates.

Cheers,

Will

Hi,
I love this app. I was using it for a long time now. For some reason after the latest apple software update (v 2.2), the app stopped working. So i reinstalled the app. Then i realised that the data was lost.

Is there anyway i can get my data.
I had stored my home expenses for the last three months. Now i'm struggling to do the tally along with my room mates.

King Brian said...

Hey Vishu,
Unfortunately, It's not looking promising if you deleted the app. The only hope is if you go to iTunes preferences and under the devices section it will tell you the last backup. If that was before you deleted it you should be able to restore your iPhone with that image.

Not sure how tech savy you are, but if you have time machine setup and you find out where the backups are kept, you may be able to retrieve an older backup.

I wish I had a better answer.

Hey Brian,

I just purchased TallyUp -- I assume this is where you want people to post feedback?

Great app! I was actually about to write something myself almost identical, then found TallyUp and realized you'd already done it better, so that's $.99 well spent. I have 4 small, hopefully easy-to-implement suggestions:

1) An option to calculate optimal payoffs between a group of people. I'm going to be using this very much like in your camping trip example, and I'd like the app to basically tell me what checks everybody should be writing to each other to minimize the number of checks and get everybody even-steven. It would be nice to (optionally) see this in the tally summary in the app, as well as in the emailed summary.

2) Another option for the email might be to specify if all of the detail is needed. In many cases I'd just like to send out what checks to write to who (as in suggestion 1) to everybody, without all the details of who paid for what originally.

3) Contact list support is great, but for contacts with multiple email address entries, it would be nice if the app would ask me which email address to associate with the person when adding them to a Tally.

4) It would be nice to have a few app-wide options for name display format (first name, first-and-last, with/without company or email address, etc.) Specifically I have some friends with the same first name, so it's a bit difficult the way the app works right now when I'm using the contact list to add people.

Thanks again for some great work on a really elegant little app!

sherkaner said...

Oh, and in answer to your question about syncing across multiple iPhones -- yes! That was actually the only other feature I was planning on when I was considering writing an app like this, and I think it would be immensely useful. That way there doesn't necessarily have to be a master planner.... anybody can help keep the tally up-to-date.

This feature would be especially useful if people could log payments against the tally. This would essentially be like a "negative" expense where a person could log the fact that they (or someone else) paid one or multiple people.

Great App! This helped immensely during my last trip with friends.

I agree with ymatto's 1st suggestion. Although it was not terribly difficult, I did end up doing some hand calculations on the hotel stationary to figure out the best way for everyone to pay each other without writing lots of checks! I also had to type this into the beginning of the email that was automatically generated so that everyone knew how to pay each other.

My other additional suggestion is to allow tracking payments between people. Sometimes money is exchanged between people during the trip which cannot directly be tracked right now.

Overall great work!

King Brian said...

Thanks for you input! I hope to do that feature next along with a translation. Unfortunately work has me slammed pretty good at the moment and near future, and I can only dream of adding new features.

So, not the answer you want I bet, but hopefully things will open up.

The aplication crashed after I had entererd about 5 items and wanted to send the bill via mail. Impossible to get back into the apli, even if you start a new bill it will crash imidiatley and leave the tally up to the home screen. I have Iphone 3G with latest version 2.2 . This is a pitty because ap is quite nice and usefull. I guess it will need a bugfiz for that.

One more suggestion:

For travelers it would be useful to have multicurrency function.Like this we could enter the amount as ist comes in every country and possibly record exchange rate.

Hi Brian,

The app has now ceased to work almost entirely... it loads but thats about it. The minute i try to create a tally sheet or open an existing one it crashes...
I have a lot of sensitive and important information on my tally's and cannot afford to delete the program and reinstall it. I sure hope there is a bugfix you have planned for the program. :(

Dejected user,

Hey folks,
First off, I want to apologize to those that are seeing crashes. I'm not sure what's causing it, and need your help in hunting it down! The iPhone stores crash logs when it syncs with iTunes, and if you could email me the crash logs I should be able to get a fix out soon.

I found a blog post that explains where the log files are stored. Email them to me at brian.a.king@gmail.com

http://www.anoshkin.net/blog/2008/09/09/iphone-crash-logs/

Thanks for your patience, I hope to get you all back up and running ASAP!

Hi
Just bought the application, could you get back to me regarding a few bugs, and your development services for Iphone applications ? Best regards, Denis.

First - I love your app. I use it all the time.

My friend and I are both self employed and do a lot of traveling together. I enter all the items and she saves the receipts. After our trip I email her the tallyup and she gives me a copy of the receipts.

It would be very convenient if the email showed what each had spent when the item was split. For instance if she paid the lunch bill but I ate more. Tally up gives the total under expenses. But in the amount owed by person it just shows that I owe her an amount. I have to go over each expense to figure out what each of us spent. We have to do this for our taxes.

We don't really care who paid for what because we "tally up" at the end. But we really care what each of us spent.

I love the concept and the application when it works, but it seems to crash continuously when I try to create a new tally or open one or more (but not all) of the existing ones. It is very frustrating when I cannot access the data that I spent some much time inputting. Is there an available fix?

Hi Brian, I just wanted to join the chorus of people who have made positive comments as to how useful this app is. I have had no issues running with the app at all - rock solid for me. I would very much like to see the app across multiple iphones - we run a small volunteer group that does trips and a number of people buy different things at different times. Phone sync would be seriously good. This is also probably going to flip you but would also love an equivalent on the mac - even if you have the iphone sync to a mac from multiple phones that would be excellent. Pity OSX does not come with an iphone emulator... DougP

Hi Brian,

Your app is one of the most useful apps I have on my iPhone. Unfortunately, it has been crashing ever since I upgraded to 4.3.

Not very clever of me, but I upgraded it right after a trip keeping track of expenses for 10 people (and before e-mailing the results). Needless to say I really need an update :-) Any plans of releasing a service update anytime?

Cheers,

Sven
